Why am I not a member of 50Plus-Skills?

Let us start by explaining the vision for this organisation.

It is a place, where anyone over the age of 50 (you can also join a little earlier) can create a profile with your details. A directory that lists your geography, industries, skills, and passion. A place where you can be contacted. A place to look for a specific set of skills for a project.

We believe that this directory contains generous, wise, skilled individuals with time and heart. People who would like to continue to add value in this next season of life. Especially as we are living longer.

This Community also invites small and medium size businesses to join. A place where you can discover the skills you may need on an ad hoc basis for your business. A HR expert, a Finance guru, a legal boffin, or a project manager. People you can connect with when needed.

We also have space for NPO’s to join. This has a win-win space for members who may be looking for a place to serve. We love doing talks with our NPO partners, to also create ways in which we can help build stronger bonds of transformation. We invite the older NPO employees to also join our talks.

Large organisations have older employees, close to retirement age. We collaborate with these companies to equip these employees with a vision of hope for their next season.

So, what does the community do for their members you may ask?

  • A directory with your details
  • Newsletters
  • Events
  • Learning Academy
  • Connections
  • Build bridges.
  • Peer to peer learning
  • Intergenerational solutions

Earlier this year, we sent out a survey to our members and asked them what they enjoyed about the community? Below a summary of their responses.

  • A place of belonging
  • Developing purpose and a reason to get up
  • Learning new skills
  • Finding ways to keep earning and remaining relevant
  • Networking, collaboration, and ways to help transform communities.

We have a place on the website where we advertise recruitment opportunities and members get these sent directly to their inbox every Monday.

It is not about finding fulltime work in this season, but rather about discovering your unique skills and creating a way to remain relevant and earn.

If you are open-minded, excited about learning new skills and meeting new people, this community will suit you. As we grow older, one of the most important health imperatives is remaining connected to people and building social capital.

Many of our events are online, but we are starting to build local communities where we can serve, learn, and earn together. A place where we meet like-minded people.

Membership is R500 for 365 days. You can join on any day of the year and the system will calculate when payment will be due again. We also have a monthly membership of R50. You can join and try out the process for a month at a time. For the price of a cup of coffee you get to experience a future filled with great ideas, learning new skills, and making a difference while meeting like-minded individuals.

I often wonder why becoming a member is a difficult decision.

One contact, idea or skill can change your future.

For my close friends that have supported me along the journey over the last six years, I am grateful for your membership and support. I sometimes describe their membership as crowd funding. This has helped us create the platform, invite the impressive speakers we have experienced and pay for the expenses involved in creating this fly-wheel effect.

So here is my question to you again: Why have you not joined yet?
