Founder Pensioners” Feeding Scheme
Words from the person who nominated Lerato
Lerato started her Soweto-based charity with some friends to feed pensioners waiting in long queues at the Post Office for their old age grants every month. Pensioners Feeding Group (PFG) is making a difference to the lives of many South African pensioners, helping them live a better later life by providing sustenance to those who need it most. Lerato does this in her spare time. By day, she is an underwriter at Just SA, talking to retirees to ensure they get the right income, for life, and gives them a better chance of getting the highest possible starting income for their retirement savings
Longevity is a mega trend impacting life for all of us. We asked Lerato what this means to her and what she does to impact change in this field of work:
Our NPO exists so that we can give back to those who have given so selflessly to us all their lives. By providing them with a meal while they wait in long queues to get their monthly old age grant, we are giving back to them one meal at a time. Our aim is to positively change a pensioner’s experience when collecting their grant. We started with the elderly from SA’s poorest communities (Soweto). We provide both breakfast and lunch in 8 pay point areas to ensure that no pensioner waits for hours at these pay points on an empty stomach.
